WW2 MM Group & Extras (Kneebone, Hampshire Regiment, Wounded) 2,125.00

Military Medal, 1939-45 Star, France & Germany Star and British War Medal awarded to 5444907 Pte. Frederick Reginald Kneebone, 1st. Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. Pte. Kneebones MM citation shows that he was recommended for a Distinguished Conduct Medal with immediate effect but was downgraded to the Military Medal. Born in May 1913 the former Stone mason & bricklayer joined the Territorial Army in January 1942, serving in the Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry where he was trained in first aid and became a stretcher bearer. He was later transferred to the Hampshire Regiment on the 9th.June 1944 just after D Day and he was wounded on the 30th of July. Whilst with 231 Bde. 50th (N) Div. 30 Corps, 1st Battalion Hampshire Regiment Pte Kneebone took part in an action during the 3rd.-4th. October 1944 north of the village of Bemmel (situated between Arnhem and Nijmegan in Holland) for which he was awarded the MM. He was later transferred to the Royal Berkshire Regiment in December 1944 where he served until October 1946 after attaining the rank of Company Quartermaster Sgt. Frederick Kneebones MM citation reads as follows - Pte. Kneebone is the senior stretcher bearer attached to C Coy. During the night 3/4 Oct 44 the Coy was in position North of the Village of Bemel and was subjected to very heavy shelling and mortar fire. Pte. Kneebone was extremely active in rendering immediate aid to wounded men of the Coy. and when it was found impossible to get transport up to the position owing to the blocking of the road by fallen trees, he personally conducted the stretcher parties through the village to the R.A.P., a distance of 1 1/2 miles under heavy fire, returning immediately to the Coy. position. On 4 Oct 44 the Coy area was subjected to air burst shelling during the morning and about 10 casualties were recovered by stretcher bearers under his supervision. At noon the Coy area was used as an assembly area by A and B Coys going into the attack. A number of casualties passed through the area and he organised carrying parties from prisoners and escorts also passing. When A and B Coys called for stretcher bearers, their own being already engaged he collected and lead forward a number of parties to recover wounded men from the forward area. During the afternoon two Coys of D.L.I. also passed through the Coy area attacking in an easterly direction and a number of walking wounded and stretcher cases returned through the Coy area, where Pte. Kneebone organised their treatment and immediate evacuation. Later during the afternoon information was received that some British wounded prisoners were in a farm house, 800 yds behind the German forward troops, which was seen to be on fire. Accompanied by one other stretcher bearer, Pte. Kneebone drove a jeep flying the red cross flag through the fighting troops to the farm and succeeded in recovering a wounded soldier of the Devonshire Regiment who was trapped in the cellar. Ascertaining that the burning farm contained no further living British wounded, he returned. By his personal bravery and devotion to duty Pte. Kneebone saved many lives during this action including that of the soldier he brought from the burning farm behind enemy lines. Fredrick Reginald Kneebone died in Greenwich October 2001 aged 88. The medal group comes with the recipients I.D. tags and a wealth of original papers and photos including a signed photo with Field Marshal Montgomery (who presented Pte Kneebone with him MM medal ribbon in Ypres), a period newspaper cutting covering the award, Kneebones hand written notebook on first aid and stretcher bearing which has some shrapnel damage, soldiers service book, release book, record of service form, medal entitlement slip and letter, wounded notification form, ID certificate, the Kings Letter with original packaging and other documents.
